This year marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, one of the most influential authors in British literary history. Readers and scholars around the world are commemorating her remarkable legacy. To honour this literary icon, we curated a special exhibition showcasing her fascinating life story and her most celebrated novels. This display invites students to explore Austen’s world and invigorate their passion for reading.
On 20 November 2025, as part of this commemoration, the Librarian Club and Art Society co-hosted the Jane Austen Brooch Making Workshop, inspired by the fashion of women during Austen’s era. The workshop received enthusiastic participation, allowing students to experience the joy of creating while cultivating a deeper interest in Austen’s works — perfectly reflecting our theme of the year: Inspire Engagement.
Last but not least, in collaboration with the English Society, we launched the Jane Austen Creative Sentence Writing Competition. Students were invited to creatively rewrite Austen’s famous quote, “If a book is well written, I always find it too short,” in no more than 30 words, imagining how she might express her feelings upon encountering a great book. Our library received over 400 entries, many of which were outstanding, showcasing students’ creativity and passion for writing.
