Author’s Talk: The Art of Embroidered Shoes Unveiled

In celebration of Chinese Week, themed around Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Librarian Club and Chinese Society proudly invited the distinguished author Ms. Miru Wong to deliver an inspiring lecture and craft demonstration on the rich history and culture of embroidered shoes on 6 February 2026.

With her background in design and heritage in the embroidery business, Miru shared fascinating insights into the evolution of these exquisite shoes. She explained how this skill was traditionally mastered by young girls in ancient China and explored the deep meanings behind various styles and patterns. Through her published works, engaging lectures, and hands-on workshops, Miru is dedicated to ensuring that these cherished traditions are passed down through generations.

The event featured a captivating live demonstration that not only enhanced students’ appreciation for this traditional craft but also ignited interest in related literature, perfectly aligning with our yearly theme: Inspire Engagement.  To top off the event, we hosted a raffle where a lucky few students won beautifully crafted embroidered shoes, celebrating this exquisite aspect of Chinese culture.  Overall, the event received glowing feedback, and students walked away with invaluable experiences and insights!
