Values Education: Filial Piety in Action

Learning with Heart through Cross-curricular Experiential Learning

To nurture students’ positive values and holistic development, our school actively integrates Values Education into meaningful learning experiences through cross-curricular collaboration and cross-committee efforts. One of the core values we nurture is filial piety, guiding students to express gratitude, respect, and care for parents and others through meaningful actions.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, the school designed a DIY Lip Balm Making Activity that transformed values learning into an authentic, hands‑on experience, thoughtfully embedded into different subjects and learning periods across levels.

For S.1 and S.2 students, the activity was implemented during Chinese Language lessons. Through curriculum‑based reading, discussion, and reflection, students explored the theme of family love and gratitude, deepening their understanding of filial piety as an essential traditional value. By creating a handmade gift, students learned that expressing love goes beyond words—it is shown through sincere and thoughtful actions.

For S.3 students, the activity was conducted in Chemistry lessons, where students applied their knowledge of chemical reactions, material properties, and safety awareness. By turning scientific concepts into a practical product, students experienced how academic learning can be meaningfully applied in daily life, reinforcing both scientific understanding and emotional connection.

For S.4 and S.5 students, the activity took place during Class Teacher periods, with support from the Community Service Group and Zonta Club. Students not only prepared lip balms for their mothers, but also extended their care to needy mothers in the community, learning that filial piety also involves empathy, social responsibility, and care for others beyond one’s own family.

❤️ Learning That Touches the Heart

Under teachers’ guidance, students carefully crafted natural lip balms using safe and simple ingredients. More importantly, they learned that values are best cultivated through experience and reflection. Each handmade lip balm became a symbol of gratitude, love, and genuine appreciation.

Through this cross‑level, cross‑subject learning experience, students strengthened academic knowledge, developed practical skills, and internalised the value of filial piety. The activity was filled with warmth, purpose, and reflection—making it a memorable learning journey that truly connected knowledge, values, and action.
